History of the International Competition for the Development of the Architectural Appearance of Moscow Metro Stations

The Moscow Metro is 60,000 employees, easy navigation, and advanced technology. Its operational length is more than 40 kilometers underground, and the transportation map continues to develop.

The tradition of holding competitions for the development of the architectural look of Moscow stations was revived in 2014. The impulse was the desire to combine comfort, speed, and safety of movement for all types of people with the spirit of the times and the real needs of citizens and visitors and to continue the tradition of architectural discoveries and experiences in the most beautiful metro in the world! After all, the Moscow Metro is more than just transport.

  • The first line opened on May 15, 1935, from Sokolniki station to Park Kultury.
  • The number of stations has increased from 13 to 251 in 86 years.
  • 7.54 million trips are made each year.
  • There are more than 9 million weekday passengers.
  • 25 new stations are planned by 2035.

In 8 years, six international competitions have been held successfully: 

  • The organizers have received more than 600 applications.
  • The participants have represented more than 50 countries.
  • The special mention of the Jury was first introduced in 2022.

The Moscow Metro is the largest in Europe and the most popular way to travel in the Russian capital. The development of the appearance of new stations is thus an important task for architects and an opportunity to become part of history.
