Sergei Georgievskii, General Director of the Agency for Strategic Development «CENTER» made a speech in the discussion “Redevelopment of industrial zones. The Needs of the City and what the Developer wants.”
During the last 10-15 years, the development of a postindustrial economy cleared a big part of urban land that used to be occupied with old industrial facilities. The best example of the wow effect is the reconstruction of a factory in Bilbao by the architect Frank Gehry that immediately made that city a Mecca for tourists and architects. Other successful examples are Docklands in London, the reconstruction of a harbor in Amsterdam and the creation of Les Halles on the site of the old Paris's central market. Moscow where a big industrial belt is situated almost in the city center is already implementing several large-scale projects for the redevelopment of industrial zones; several other projects are being processed.
In his speech, Sergey Georgievsky spoke about a comprehensive approach towards the integration of the reorganized industrial facilities into the city environment that was proposed within the framework of the research “Moscow RE: industrial. Types of industrial facilities and best practices of redevelopment” that was triggered by the Agency for Strategic Development «CENTER» together with experts.
