Kirovo-Chepetsk residents share their visions for the future of the town

31 January, 2019

On January 31, in Kirovo-Chepetsk, two events of importance to the town were held, in connection with the development of a comfortable urban environment. The Agency for Strategic Development CENTER held an expert meeting in the Kirovo-Chepetsk Administration and a workshop for residents, at which it presented its Concept for the development of the urban environment in the central part of the town
At the meeting in the town administration, the design team presented the results of its two months of work. A comprehensive analysis of the urban environment of Kirovo-Chepetsk conducted by Agency CENTER analysts lay at the foundation of its concept. The concept includes suggestions for developing the town’s brand, and also preliminary design solutions for improving Constitution Square and the square on Pervomayskaya street, which will become two of the most important objects in the town’s network of public spaces. The meeting went well: administration representatives and experts expressed their wishes for further work on the project and discussed proposals for the visual identity of the town.
Work on the design concept continued at the seminar with the residents, which happened in a place of particular local importance: the exhibition hall of the Brylin Children’s Art School, named for honored Kirovo-Chepetsk resident Leonid Timofeevich Brylin. The purpose of the event was to create a common vision of the coming changes for the design team and local residents. The seminar was completely open and public: anyone with a concern for the future of the town could participate.

The seminar was divided into two parts: a presentation, and a workshop. After the presentation of the design concept the approximately one hundred participants divided themselves into five groups for joint work with experts from Agency CENTER, to find common positions on the proposed design decisions and offer suggestions for ensuring the project meets the needs of all local residents.
The meeting ended with each group presenting its vision for the project to those present. Several proposals from residents were unusual and ambitions, like, for example, a dinosaur park, or a floating bridge, similar to the bridge in Moscow’s Zaryadye Park. The workshop also saw a large number of practical proposals: for the improvement of the square’s drainage system, the installation of video surveillance and lighting systems, and the creation of separate pedestrian and cycle paths. Residents’ proposals also included the location of coffee points, and of places to charge electrical gadgets and for wireless internet access. One popular proposal was for the installation of unique art objects or a fountain. The square’s basic function is recreational, and residents noted the importance of protecting the existing greenery, which makes the public space more comfortable.
The results of the participants’ joint work were recorded by representatives of the Agency for Strategic Development CENTER for further analysis, the results of which will be presented in an updated concept for the town’s public spaces.
