Makhachkala in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia will host the 3rd International Urban Forum “Dagestan: New Development Scenarios”

On September 23 and 24, 2021, the city of Makhachkala in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia will host the 3rd International Urban Forum “Dagestan: New Development Scenarios”. It will once again provide a discussion platform for the exchange of experience, where cases and methods in architecture, urban studies and urban planning will be presented.

This is an annual event dedicated to issues of the comprehensive development of territories and modern design of a comfortable urban environment. The agenda of the Forum is focused on real-life Russian and foreign case studies of the overhaul of the urban environment.

The event will take place at the “Russia, My History” Historical Park.

The Forum is organized by the Government of the Republic of Dagestan and the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of the Republic of Dagestan.

The Russian-French School of Heritage Preservation and Revalorization “RE-School” and Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urban Studies National Research University Higher School of Economics will serve as intellectual partners for the forum.

The Forum’s Operator and Program Directorate is the Agency for Strategic Development CENTER.

Forum, Day 1:

  • “From results to new challenges and development goals. What should we focus on?” plenary session, in which participants will discuss the results of work and new objectives currently relevant in the Republic of Dagestan.
  • "New approaches to the comprehensive development of territories: ‘smart’ space for living and working” discussion, where experts will exchange views on modern tools for the management of built areas and the development of new ones.
  • “The evolution of standards and regulations. The logic and context of the practical application of the regulatory framework in urban planning” analytical session and a public talk with leading architects, “Modern public spaces — new symbols and points of attraction in cities and regions.”
  • Workshops: “Cultural heritage as a challenge and a resource for the development of the city.” The role of a comprehensive approach to the functional programming of the urban environment” (Maria Sedletskaya, Head of the analytical group CENTER Lab); “Modern approaches to working with the historical and cultural heritage of cities and regions” (winners of the Open Nationwide Competition for developing an architectural and urban planning concept for public spaces in the Republic of Dagestan): “Magly Proekt,” MLA +, “Lyzlov’s Architectural Workshop” (AML), a creator-owned workshop by a RE-School expert.

Forum, Day 2:

  • “Models and institutions for the development of agglomerations as a basis for the balanced development of territories” practical session.
  • “Territory of Childhood: schools, kindergartens, and playgrounds as the constructors of happiness” Case session, with a discussion of sociocultural and educational challenges that schools and universities can solve through architecture.
  • “Planet Dagestan. Responding to people’s needs” closing session, with a discussion of the following questions: What are the development priorities of the Republic of Dagestan? What impact does Dagestan have on the global map? How can we maintain our traditions and be at the forefront of advanced solutions? What is the identity of the Republic of Dagestan and what are its spatial forms of expression?
