Sergei Georgievskii was the moderator of the round-table discussion as part of the exhibition “Reconstruction of Soviet Cinemas of Moscow”

On September 26, a round-table discussion was held in the House on Brestskaya in the currently relevant topic “Prospects of Soviet Cinemas Reconstruction”. The discussion moderator was General Director of the Agency for Strategic Development “CENTER”, Sergei Georgievskii.

In the course of the discussion, the invited experts recollected interesting solutions of the first contest for redevelopment concepts of Moscow district cinemas, found out a lot of interesting things about the current rebranding of Moskino network of cinemas, discussed the positive experience of modernization of similar venues - Houses of Culture, talked about more global issues, such as museum projects and their adaptation to the needs of the present-day person.


The following persons participated in the discussion of prospects of Soviet cinemas reconstruction:

  • Alexei Vorobiev, Head of Department for Coordination of Moscow Region Territories Improvement, supervisor of the Contest for development of design projects for the spaces of culture and entertainment institutions of Moscow Region;
  • Svetlana Maximchenko, General Director of MOSKINO, SBE of culture “Moscow Cinema”;
  • Nikolai Lyzlov, Vice President of the Union of Moscow Architects, jury member of the 1st contest for Moscow cinemas reconstruction (Voskhod cinema, Varshava cinema);
  • Nikita Tokarev, Director of MARSH School of Architecture, jury member of the 1st contest for Moscow cinemas reconstruction (Voskhod cinema, Varshava cinema);
  • Vladimir Markin, Deputy Head for Investments and Development, Doctor of Economic Sciences Of FSBE Channel of Moscow;
  • Anton Lagutin, Head of Department of Intermuseum and Tourist Programs of Mosgortur State Autonomous Institution of Culture of Moscow;
  • Yuri Volchok, Professor of the Moscow Institute of Architecture, academician of the Arts Academy of Architecture.
In the course of the discussion, Sergei Georgievskii shared the experience of work related to Soviet cinemas reconstruction accumulated by the Agency for Strategic Development “CENTER”. In 2015, the Agency conducted a contest to develop the concept for redevelopment of the two Soviet cinemas, Voskhod and Varshava. They had to be turned into public local multifunctional centers focused on the relevant needs of the citizens.


The experience received in the work with the cinemas was adapted and applied in the contest for design projects of spaces in houses of culture in the Moscow Region where the task was to create the best concept of modernization of the houses of culture, including proposals connected with company style and sketches of design projects using the example of three regional pilot institutions. The contest winner was the Agency for Strategic Development “CENTER” in consortium with the architectural bureau Planet 9 and ABCdesign.
