How to develop a city while preserving its identity

Olga Gritsan, Head of the Analytical Department at the Agency for strategic development "CENTER", contributed expert commentary to two Business FM articles exploring the identity of urban spaces and contemporary approaches to urban development.

According to Gritsan, a place’s identity is shaped not only by its history but also by how residents perceive it and relate to it. Balancing historical context with contemporary design becomes particularly challenging when developing historic areas.

“Conflicts most often arise when contemporary approaches to public realm improvements are proposed for historic areas,” Olga Gritsan noted.

She also emphasised that the urban environment must be able to accommodate change. Design should preserve the core meanings that define a place while allowing it to adapt to new functions, technologies and residents’ needs.

Gritsan also commented on the use of standardised solutions in public realm improvements. In her view, it is more appropriate to speak of scalable approaches that must be adapted to the urban planning, natural, social and historical context of each location.

“Landmark spaces always require individual solutions, as they not only express a place’s identity but also shape the distinctive image of cities and make them recognisable.”
