From Concept to City — Student Projects Shape the Future of Sergiev Posad

23 April, 2026

Urban development concepts created by architecture and urban planning students have drawn strong interest from local authorities in Sergiev Posad. The projects, developed by students of the Moscow Architectural Institute (MARCHI) and the Presidential Academy, were presented to representatives of the city administration, the Sergiev Posad Development Fund, and leading experts in spatial development, architecture, and urban governance.

MARCHI students showcased four residential development proposals, while students from the Presidential Academy’s Department of Territorial Development presented five concepts for the historic city center. These included visions for Krasnogorskaya Square near the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius and the future Pavel Florensky Museum of Russian Philosophical Thought.

According to State Duma deputy and Executive Secretary of the Sergiev Posad Development Fund’s Board of Trustees Sergei Pakhomov, fresh perspectives and unconventional ideas from young professionals are a critical asset — particularly when these future specialists are already engaging deeply with the city’s urban context and are ready to contribute to its long-term development.

During the presentation, students received detailed expert feedback aimed at refining their proposals. As noted by Head of the Sergiev Posad Urban District Oksana Erokhanova, the most promising ideas may evolve into real projects, while such engagements foster both innovation and a deeper connection between young professionals and the city’s historical identity.

The presentation formed part of the educational initiative Context, led by the Agency for strategic development "CENTER" in partnership with the MARCHI workshop “M.A.M”. The program is designed to bridge academic training and real-world practice — enabling students to work with actual urban development cases.

As part of the initiative, the Agency provided project briefs based on real strategic work — including the updated spatial development strategy and urban planning regulations for Sergiev Posad. It also delivered lectures, seminars, and консультации, supported by comprehensive analytical and data-driven materials.

The projects will continue to be refined through the end of the academic year. According to the Sergiev Posad Development Fund, the strongest concepts and planning solutions may inform future architectural competitions and territorial development projects.

“Our company has always placed a strong emphasis on educational initiatives. It is critical that students engage not with abstract tasks, but with the real fabric of the city. This project marks a new step in our long-term educational program — enabling future professionals to balance bold ideas with the practical needs of the territory,” said Sergei Georgievskii, Co-founder of the Agency for strategic development "CENTER".
