International Competition for the Architectural and Urban Planning Concept for the Development of a Tourism Area in Staraya Ladoga

The international competition is aimed at selecting the best architectural and urban planning concept for the development of a tourism area in Staraya Ladoga, Volkhov Municipal District, Leningrad Region.

The project focuses on creating modern tourism infrastructure that responds to the territory’s unique historical and cultural heritage, natural context, and long-term development potential as a significant tourism destination.

The objective of the competition is to select the best architectural and urban planning concept for the development of a tourism area in Staraya Ladoga, Volkhov Municipal District, Leningrad Region.

Key objectives of the competition

  • Define the core idea and development scenario for the tourism area in Staraya Ladoga
  • Develop proposals for the functional and planning organization of the territory, functional zoning, and placement of tourism facilities, taking into account urban planning constraints and development prerequisites
  • Shape architectural and artistic solutions for the external appearance and interiors of tourism and infrastructure facilities
  • Develop a socio-cultural program for the territory and define user scenarios
  • Propose landscape and architectural solutions that reflect the historical, urban planning, and natural context
  • Substantiate the socio-economic efficiency and technical feasibility of the proposed solutions

Staraya Ladoga is a territory with unique historical and cultural heritage and significant potential for the development of domestic and international tourism. Our task is to identify contemporary architectural and urban planning solutions that will reveal this place in a new way while preserving its historical identity. The competition will bring together the expertise of leading professional teams and form an integrated vision for the future development of the territory

The subject of the competition is the development of an architectural and urban planning concept for the tourism area in Staraya Ladoga, including integrated solutions for spatial development, tourism infrastructure, functional programming, the architectural image of facilities, and new scenarios for the use of the territory.

The competition is held in an international format among professional organizations working in architecture, urban planning, public space development, and functional and content programming of territories.

Teams with experience in new construction, reconstruction, restoration, and redevelopment projects are invited to participate. Teams should also be able to involve specialists in economics, tourism, and the hospitality industry.

Based on the results of the competition, the jury will select the best concepts for the development of the tourism area.

Prize fund

The total prize fund is RUB 13,000,000.

Prize distribution:

  • 1st place — RUB 4,000,000
  • 2nd place — RUB 3,000,000
  • 3rd–5th places — RUB 2,000,000 each
